The Capped Bust is the fourth of eight major types in the United States Half Dime series, and it was produced from 1829 through 1837.  This design is credited to William Kneass, although the engraver's work in this instance is actually a refined version of John Reich's Capped Bust motif originally introduced in 1807.  Struck as they were after new technological improvements were introduced in the Mint, all examples of this type display a beaded border and a uniform diameter.  (There is no Large Size Capped Bust Half Dime as there is with the Capped Bust Dime, the former denomination experiencing a sizeable gap in production from 1806-1828.)  Mintage figures for all issues in this Half Dime series are concentrated around the 1 million-coin mark.  Most deliveries are similar in terms of absolute and condition rarity, but there are a few scarcer varieties that include the 1834 3/Inverted 3, 1836 3/Inverted 3 and 1837 Small 5C.
