The Seated Dime underwent a significant design change in 1860 through the efforts of James Barton Longacre.  Gone are the obverse stars, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA moving into their position from its former placement around the reverse periphery.  Longacre also did away with the simple laurel wreath on the reverse and replaced it with a more elaborate cereal wreath.  In 1860 and 1861, there are five lines in the obverse shield above the ribbon upon which LIBERTY is inscribed, whereas those coins produced beginning in the latter year display six lines.  It is important to note that, while the 1860 and 1860-O are the premier issues of the Legend Obverse type, the 1860-S was produced using the old Stars Obverse design.
