In 1793, George Washington held the first ever cabinet meeting. Unlike future meetings that would include sixteen cabinet members, this first one included just four. Washington met with: Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of War Henry Knox and Attorney General Edmund Randolph. Notably absent from the meeting was Vice President John Adams who believed his position was "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived or his imagination conceived." This 1793 cent recalls the creation of the first presidential cabinet.
