In 1795, George Washington ratified the Jay Treaty between the US and Great Britain. Since the Revolutionary War, an uneasy peace had remained between Washington and London. The results of the treaty were that Britain abandoned its northwestern forts and the US gave their old mother nation the status of most favored nation for trade and to make its private citizens honor any pre-war debts they owed to Britain or any of its citizens. The treaty was unpopular with the American public as the only real benefit gained by the US was already a term of the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The treaty would prove to solidify peace with Britain for 17 years, giving the US a chance to build the navy necessary to challenge the island nation.
