In 1796, Captain Moses Porter marched into Detroit at the head of a small army. This was more symbolic than part of any campaign as the city had been ceded to the US by the British in the Jay Treaty. Nevertheless, this event marks the first time the US flag was flown over what would later be a major US city. This 1796 draped bust quarter eagle recalls this momentous occasion.
