1797 DRAPED BUST 1C, REV OF '95, GRIPPED EDGE MS64 Brown
GRIPPED EDGE. REV OF 1795. THIS S-120b IS ONLY MINT STATE.
1797 marks the first time that the House of Representatives exercised its power of impeachment. Senator William Blount of Tennessee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was accused of helping the British enlist Cherokee to assist them in taking over Spanish Florida and Louisiana. Even though Blount subsequently admitted to his role in this conspiracy, the Senate dismissed the impeachment by a vote of 14 to 11. This 1797 draped bust cent recalls this first of its kind trial.
