In 1798, the US Department of Navy was formed from the recommendation of Secretary or War, James McHenry. The department was created to act as an organizational structure for the US Navy and later grew to incorporate the Marine Corps as well. This 1798 silver dollar may have been used to pay the salary of the first Secretary of the Navy, Benjamin Stoddert.
