In 1800, Congress held its first meeting in the District of Columbia. Prior to this point, Philadelphia had been acting as a temporary capital. Washington D.C., the federal district, was donated by Maryland and Virginia to the federal government, the Virginia’s ceded territory was given back in 1846. This 1800 dime may have been present for Congress’ first meeting in the new capital city.
