Having purchased the expansive territory of Louisiana from Napoleonic France for $15 million in 1803, the US set its sights westward. After Thomas Jefferson was able to secure funds from Congress for an expedition to explore possible routes to the Pacific Ocean, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set off from St. Louis on May 14th, 1804. Could this 1804 dime have been used by the explorers to purchase necessary supplies for their legendary adventure? It is even possible that Lewis and Clark or one of their travelling companions received this coin in change and trekked with it on their arduous march to the sea before returning to the States.
