In 1805, Oliver Evans and his high-pressure steam engine successfully dredged the harbor of Philadelphia. While Evans was never able to patent his invention, it became both the first high pressure steam engine, amphibious vehicle and even automobile created in the United States. This 1805 half cent recalls this little known yet groundbreaking invention.
