In 1805, the explorer Lieutenant Zebulon Pike, during his exploration of the land newly purchased from Napoleon, purchased nine square miles of land from the Sioux Indians. The land, at the mouth of the Minnesota River became the land used by Pike to establish Fort Snelling. This 1805 dime recalls the $2,000 spent by Pike to acquire the territory.
