In 1806, Leonidas Polk was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. Polk, a relative of future President James Polk, served as both an Episcopal Bishop and a Confederate General, earning him the nickname Sewanee’s Fighting Bishop. Polk commanded Confederate troops in four battles and two campaigns before being killed in action in 1864. This 1806 quarter recalls one of the more notable Confederate figures of the Civil War.
