In 1806, a few years after the Louisiana Purchase and just a couple years after Lewis and Clark were sent on their famous journey, Lieutenant Zebulon Pike was sent on his own expedition to find explore the south and west of the newly purchased swath of land. During this expedition, Pike traveled through the Rocky Mountains and discovered the large mountain that now bears his name; Pike’s Peak. Could this 1806 half dollar have been carried by Pike or one of his men on his adventure?
