In 1806, Andrew Jackson challenged Charles Dickinson to a duel after the man accused the future president of cheating on a horse bet. During the duel, Jackson would take a bullet to the chest before returning fire and killing Dickinson. The bullet in Jackson’s chest was never removed and was buried with him in 1845. This 1806/5 quarter eagle recalls a day that very nearly could have changed American history.
