In 1807, President Thomas Jefferson signed the Embargo Act which forbade all exports from the United States. The act was a response to British aggression against the US and its citizens when its Navy seized ships and reprimanded those they believed to be British sailors who deserted. The embargo sought to punish Britain without going to war but was repealed just two years later as the US economy began to suffer. This 1807 cent recalls an act that kept all US merchant ships at their docks.
