1809/8 CAPPED BUST $5 MS63+
WONDERFUL OVERDATE EXAMPLE. ONLY 33,875 STRUCK. CAC.
In 1809, the USS Constitution was reinstated as the flagship of the United States Navy after two years of inactivity. The Constitution became known as “Old Ironsides” several years later during the War of 1812 in a battle with the HMS Guerreire when cannonballs were observed to bounce off the Constitution’s hull. First commissioned in 1797, the Constitution’s copper fastenings were made by Paul Revere and her body was made from trees from across North America. Could this 1809/8 half eagle have sailed aboard this most treasured of US Navy frigates?
