1821 witnessed the Norfolk and Long Island Hurricane that destroyed $200,000 in property and directly led to at least twenty-two deaths. The hurricane is remarkable as it was one of only four known tropical cyclones to have made landfall in New York City, which includes one believed to have occurred before the European arrival. This 1821 dime, minted in Philadelphia, may have experienced this deadly and abnormal hurricane.
