In 1831, France sent a man by the name of Alexis de Tocqueville to visit the United States and examine its prison system. Four years later he published the work, “Democracy in America”, a book the Library of America asserts “is arguably the most perceptive and influential book ever written about American politics and society.” Having spent 9 month in the United States, de Tocqueville certainly handled his fair share of US coinage. Could this 1831 dime have assisted the author and magistrate in acquiring a steamboat ticket from New Orleans or a stagecoach ticket from Michigan woods?
