In 1836, Congress met to determine whether or not they would accept a donation from an Englishman named James Smithson who had never even travelled to the US. Congress eventually voted that it would accept the donation that consisted of 100,000 gold British sovereigns along with the Smithson’s stipulation that the money be used to increase the diffusion of knowledge. This 1836 half dime recalls the donation that led to the establishment of the Smithsonian Institute.
