In 1837, Washington Irving completed his “The Adventures of Captain Bonneville”. The novel, an account of the real life French-born Benjamin Bonneville, was written after Irving met the explorer in New York City and learned of his journeys. Irving agreed to pay Bonneville $1,000 for all of his maps and notes. This 1837 half dime recalls the publishing of this third of Irving’s novels about the American West.
