In 1838, two Members of the House of Representatives engaged in a duel. In the duel, Jonathan Cilley of Maine was killed by William Graves of Kentucky after Cilley had refused to accept a letter from an associate of Graves whom he had previously slandered on the House floor. Graves took the refusal as an insult and challenged Cilley to the fateful duel. This 1838 half dollar pattern recalls this duel that went for an unusual three rounds.
