In 1842, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow raced to catch a luxury steamship called the Lexington for which he had a ticket. Longfellow was unable to get to the boat in time and it set sail without him. During the cruise, the Lexington caught fire and sank off the coast of the Long Island Sound. The fire and resulting wreck resulted in the deaths of all but four people aboard the Lexington. This 1840 dime recalls a tragedy that very nearly claimed the life of one the great American poets.
