1841 witnessed the most violent demonstration to occur on White House property in US history. Angered about President Tyler’s decision to veto a bill that would re-establish the Second Bank of America, members of the Whig Party rioted outside the President’s residence, hurling rocks at windows and even hanging and burning an effigy of Tyler. This 1841 half dollar recalls this unprecedented event.
