1842-D LIBERTY HEAD $2.5 AU58
VERY SCARCE. ONLY 4,643 STRUCK. TIED FOR HIGHEST GRADED AT PCGS.
In 1842, Commodore Thomas Jones ordered the surrender of Mexican officials in the town of Monterey in the Mexican controlled territory of California. However, the Commodore did this under the false belief that the US had gone to war with the Mexican government. Learning of his error, Jones returned Monterey to the Mexican officials and went on his way. This 1842 quarter eagle, minted in Denver, may have been on the Commodore’s ship as he temporarily captured a Mexican town.
