In 1846, Virginia received back the land it had earlier ceded to the Federal government to create the District of Columbia. Land from both Virginia and Maryland was originally given but residents of the Virginia portion feared that slavery would be abolished in the district and petitioned to be reincorporated into Virginia. This 1846 silver dollar recalls this unusual act of retrocession.
