In 1849, the Mormon leader, James Strang, settled on Beaver Island in Lake Michigan with 250 of his followers. Strang had vied for the leadership of the entire Mormon Church when Joseph Smith was put to death, but lost that position to Brigham Young. Strang then created his own faction of the Church and brought this following to the Lake Michigan island. Several years later, Strang would declare himself as monarch of his faction. This 1849 quarter eagle recalls the reign of the only King to rule over a Kingdom based in the United States.
