Colt Navy Revolvers manufactured from 1851 to 1861 all bear the engraving “The 1843 Naval Battle of Campeche” on their cylinders. In 1843, Texas was amid its war for independence from Mexico and made a large purchase from Samuel Colt for revolvers and carbines. This 1851 silver three cent coin recalls the memorialization of a the large purchase that led to a Texan strategic victory over a Mexican fleet and saved Colt’s company from the brink of bankruptcy.
