In 1852, a ship entered the harbor of San Francisco after a considerable journey from its port in France. Aboard the ship were two hundred immigrants who had been deemed “undesirable” in their native country, mostly from criminal activities. The state earned the money to send these people to California from the proceeds of a national lottery. This 1852 dollar pattern recalls the San Francisco influx of French “undesirables”.
