In 1852, forty-four people in the northern Oregon Territory meet at what is called the Monticello Convention. In this convention, the men decide to form a separate government north of the Columbia River, creating the Washington Territory. This 1852 silver dollar recalls the creation of a territory that would eventually become the state of Washington.
