In 1852, Admiral Matthew Perry was sent to open the ports of Japan to American trade using any means necessary, a notable example of “gunboat diplomacy”. Three years later, believing his mission to have been a success, Congress awarded the Admiral $20,000. Coins, such as the 1852 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar, were surely part of this hefty reward.
