GEM SURFACES. TIED WITH 1 OTHER FOR SECOND HIGHEST GRADED.
In 1852, California State Senator James Denver challenged Edward Gilbert to a duel. Gilbert, the editor of a San Francisco newspaper, had published an editorial that Denver did not appreciate. The duel was held near Sacramento and resulted in Gilbert’s death. This 1852 half dime recalls this highly publicized duel.
