In 1853 a clipper ship named the Great Republic was launched into the Boston Harbor. This ship was the largest wooden clipper ever constructed and cost nearly half a million dollars to build. Boston authorities declared the launch day a holiday and somewhere between 30,000 and 50,000 people attended. Shortly before her maiden voyage to New York, a fire that started at a Boston bakery spread to the harbor and set the massive ship ablaze. Could this 1853 eagle have been in Boston to see the launch and destruction of the short-lived Great Republic?
