In 1853, a man named William Waldo was campaigning to become Governor of the young state of California. In his search for votes, Waldo travelled to the town of Sailor’s Digging and apparently was quite convincing. Unfortunately for Waldo, the town was in fact located in Oregon and its inhabitants could not vote for him. While Waldo did not become California governor, the town of Sailor’s Diggings was renamed in his honor. This 1853 half cent recalls the immortalized blunder of William Waldo.
