In 1853, the first major U.S. railroad bridge disaster occurred in Norwalk, Connecticut. In this disaster, 48 people were killed when a passenger train was failed to be warned the Norwalk Bridge was open and everything but the last car plunged at full speed into the river. The responsible railroad company later settled claims for an estimated $290,000. Could this 1853 gold dollar have been part of the compensation to the family of one of the victims?
