1853 marks the year traditionally accepted to have seen the creation of the potato chip. The legend goes that when a patron at a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York, sent back an order of French fries for being too thick, cook and owner George Crum cut potatoes paper thin and presented them to the customer. While the order was presented as a joke, the customer found the chips delicious and thus the “Saratoga Chip” was born. Could this 1853 half dime have been used that day to purchase what are claimed to be first potato chips?
