In 1854, Elisha Otis demonstrated his safety elevator at the New York World’s Fair. Unhappy with the little attention his groundbreaking invention was receiving, Otis concocted the ingenious plot to give a dramatic presentation of his elevator brakes in front of large crowds during the World’s Fair in New York. Standing on a platform raised high by the mechanisms of an elevator Otis, wielding a saber, slashed the rope holding up the platform. Instead of plummeting to his death like the onlookers assumed he would, Otis dropped just several feet before his brakes stopped the fall. Could this 1854 three dollar gold coin have been present for this demonstration that helped popularize an invention that went on to save countless lives?
