In 1855, construction ended on the first bridge to cross the Mississippi River. The bridge operated for a total of 15 days before it was destroyed by a ship crashing into it and the ensuing fire. This 1855 cent recalls a legal battle that would see future president Abraham Lincoln represent the railroad companies against the shipping company.
