In 1855, Winfield Scott became the first man to lay claim to the title of Lieutenant General since George Washington held the position. Scott, nicknamed the “Grand Old Man of the Army”, served in conflicts ranging from the War of 1812 to the Mexican-American War and was even a presidential candidate in the 1840 and 1852 elections. This 1855 braided hair cent recalls the second time a US officer held the title of Lieutenant General.
