In 1855, the city of Chicago was sinking into the muddy shores of Lake Michigan. So much so that city officials deemed it necessary to raise the entire city by as much as ten feet. For the next twenty years, each building was raised and the street was covered in dirt to meet the new height of front doors. Large buildings needed the help of thousands of men all turning large corkscrews to rise. This 1855 three dollar gold coin recalls the beginning of this massive project.
