1856 saw one of the deadliest natural disasters in Louisiana history. The Great Storm of 1856 saw Last Island completely submerged and the destruction of all its structures, including hotels and casinos. All told, the storm claimed the lives of at least two hundred people and physically split Last Island in half. This 1856 half dime, minted in New Orleans, likely witnessed this costly event.
