In 1857, Mormon leader Brigham Young rallied his Nauvoo Legion in an expectation of defending the Utah Territory against US troops. The Legion, a Mormon militia, would go on to fight US soldiers in the Utah War and wipe out a large wagon train of migrants in the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Later in the same year, the militia arrested six men travelling to California on the suspicion of being spies and confiscated $25,000 they were carrying. Could this 1857 gold dollar have been among the confiscated fortune?
