In 1857, the SS Central America sank under the waves during a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina. The Central America was carrying 578 passengers as well as over 30,000 pounds of gold when it went down and only 153 passengers were able to make it onto the salvation of the ship’s lifeboats and live to tell the tale. As for the gold, all was lost for over a century until when in 1987, a salvaging crew came upon the ship’s remains. The ship and its unusually large quantities of gold were headed from California to New York in in order to alleviate an East Coast banking panic. This 1857 gold dollar, therefore, is a reminder of perhaps the only maritime disaster to greatly contributed to a financial crisis.
