In 1857, Paul Morphy became the first American chess idol after defeating Adolf Anderssen. Morhpy went on to defeat every chess master that challenged him. When there were no more notable masters to challenge him, Morhpy declared he would take on any player. When no one responded to this challenge, Morphy retired from the game at the age of 22 to pursue a career in law. This 1857 silver dollar recalls the short career of the world’s best chess player.
