1857 witnessed the highly publicized Supreme Court case of Dred Scott v. Sanford. Scott was born a slave in Virginia but brought to the free territory of Wisconsin and leased by his owner, John Emerson, to Fort Snelling where he married and had children. When his owner returned, Scott attempted to buy the freedom of himself and his family but was refused and elected to take legal action. Scott and his lawyers claimed that when Emerson leased Scott in Wisconsin, he illegally brought slavery to a free territory. The case made its way up to the Supreme Court where, by a decision of 7-2, Scott’s claims were rejected. This 1857 silver three cent recalls a highly controversial court decision.
