In 1861, the newly inaugurated President Abraham Lincoln escaped an assassination attempt that would have occurred in Baltimore, Maryland. Lincoln had planned to stop in Maryland’s largest city before making his way to Washington D.C., but his bodyguards caught wind of a plot to kill the President and ordered the train to continue on to the capital. This 1861 double eagle recalls the attempted assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
