In 1863, Confederate troops stationed in the Rappahannock Valley of Virginia emerged after a blizzard to two feet of snow. Soldiers from the North Carolina Infantry division began a snowball fight that grew to involve nearly 10,000 troops. The Great Confederate Snowball Fight, as it was later termed, included divisions from North Carolina and Georgia and was even witnessed by the celebrated Thomas Johnathan “Stonewall” Jackson, though the General did not participate. This 1863 silver three cent coin recalls one of the more cheerful events to emerge during the Civil War.
