NGC Graded Higher:
1865 saw the Battle of Sailor’s Creek, an engagement that cut down General Robert E. Lee’s forces by as much as a quarter, setting the stage for the famed commander’s eventual surrender at Appomattox Courthouse two days later. This 1865 quarter recalls the last major battle of the Civil War.
This is a short-lived, two-year proof type the pursuit of which is a task for those with an overabundance of patience and very deep pockets. The proof 1854 and 1855 Arrows Quarters have unknown, although presumably very limited original mintages. It is likely that the combined extant population of both issues is fewer than 30 coins, and survivors appear in the market only once in a very long while.
