1868 marked the end of Red Cloud’s War in western Montana. A gold rush in Montana brought with it an influx of settlers into what were Lakota, Sioux, Arapaho and Cheyenne hunting lands agreed upon in the Laramie Treaty of 1851. The Lakota chief, Red Cloud, led a number of attacks on both settlers and US troops. In the largest fight of the conflict, the Fetterman Massacre, 81 US troops were lost in what was the largest US defeat on the plains until the Battle of Little Big Horn.
