1872 GOLD G$1, TYPE 3 PR65
GEM PROOF. ONLY 30 STRUCK.
In 1872, a group of men successfully swindled $660,000 from investors to buy their rights to a “diamond field” in Wyoming. It was later determined that the men had travelled to London where they purchased $35,000 worth of diamond refuse, which they simply sprinkled around their Wyoming property before bringing the proposed investor’s prospectors. When the prospectors shared their findings with the investors, which included Tiffany & Co. and Baron von Rothschild, a deal was quickly struck. News of the field even spurred a short-lived diamond prospecting craze in the US. This 1872 gold dollar remembers an event known to history as the Great Diamond Hoax.
