In 1873, an event known as the Colfax Massacre occurred in Grant Parish, Louisiana. The massacre occurred when a massive gang of Democrats, outraged when their candidate lost the gubernatorial election, attacked the Colfax Courthouse and took many black freedmen prisoner, later executing somewhere from 62 to 150. By the time that federal troops arrived in Colfax, most of the attackers had fled to Texas. Though 97 were identified and put on trial for murder the charges were eventually dismissed by the Supreme Court. This 1873 gold dollar remembers the most violent event to take place during the Reconstruction period.
